Course Content

Respond to an emergency situation

• Recognise and assess an emergency situation
• Ensure safety for self, bystanders and casualty
• Assess the casualty and recognise the need for a first aid response
• Seek assistance from emergency services

Apply appropriate emergency first aid procedures

• Perform CPR
• Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
• Ensure casualty feels safe, secure and supported
• Obtain consent from the casualty where possible
• Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
• Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions
• Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles

Communicate details of the incident

• Accurately convey incident details to emergency services
• Report details of incident in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures
• Complete applicable workplace or site documentation, including incident report form
• Report details of incidents involving infants and children to caregivers
• Follow appropriate workplace or site procedures to report serious incidents to the regulatory authority
• Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information in line with statutory or organisational policies

Review the incident

• Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required.
• Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required

Duration

The duration of the course is approximately 8 hours (Plus pre-course learning to be completed by all full course participants prior to the training day).

Entry Requirements

Participants must be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment.

Assessment

This course is assessed through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
Please note, it is a requirement of this course that practical demonstration of CPR must be performed on the floor.

Certification

On successfully completing the training and assessment, participants will obtain a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency:

• Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Provide First Aid
• Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

NOTE: These units of competency have a requirement that the participants must be able to demonstrate a minimum of 2min of CPR on a manikin placed on the floor as part of the assessment.

Validity

To ensure your skills and knowledge remain current re-certification must occur annually from date of course.

• Contribute to workplace reporting of an incident and psychological impacts on self and others
• Treatment of shock, infection, fractures, bleeding and burns
• Emergencies due to lack of oxygen, excess heat or cold
• Recognition and management of medical conditions that may need emergency care, including heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy
• Management of common medical emergencies using available equipment
• Treatment of poisoning including venomous bites and stings

Entry Requirements

Participants must be a minimum of 14 years of age on the date of final assessment.

Delivery Options

The following delivery options are available for the Provide First Aid Course

• Full flexible delivery – One full day of training (8 hours) plus a question and answer workbook (available online or in hardcopy format) to be completed independently prior to the day of practical training.
• Full course – Two full days of face to face training (16 hours)
• Update course – One full day of face to face training

Assessment

This course is assessed through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
Please note, it is a requirement of this course that practical demonstration of CPR must be performed on the floor.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an internationally recognised statement of attainment by Australian Lifesaving Academy for the following units of competency:

• Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Provide basic emergency life support
• Provide First Aid

Pre Course Learning

Approximately 1 hour online activities.

Validity

Two (2) years from date of course. It is recommended that the CPR component of this course be updated every 12 months

First aid procedures for a range of scenarios, including the following

• wounds and bleeding including life threatening bleeding and use of tourniquets
• emergency childbirth
• substance misuse, including common
• drugs and alcohol, including illicit drugs
• crush injuries

Duration

2 Days (approx. 8 hours per day) Plus pre course learning to be completed if participants do not hold a current – Provide first aid certificate.

Entry Requirements

Participants must be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment.

Assessment

This course is assessed through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
Please note, it is a requirement of this course that practical demonstration of CPR must be performed on the floor.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an internationally recognised statement of attainment by Australian Lifesaving Academy for the following units of competency:

• Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Provide basic emergency life support
• Provide first aid
• Provide advanced first aid

Validity

To ensure your skills and knowledge remain current re-certification must occur every 3 years

• Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• Contribute to workplace reporting of an incident and psychological impacts on self and others

Duration

2.5 hours including assessment.

Participants must be a minimum of 10 years of age on the date of final assessment.

The course is assessed through demonstration*, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
Please note, it is a requirement of this course that practical demonstration of CPR must be performed on the floor.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an internationally recognised statement of attainment by Australian Lifesaving Academy for the following units of competency:

• Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Validity

One (1) year from date of course. It is recommended that you update your CPR skills every 12 months.
